Audition Information
USF Dance Program Auditions: New Dance Majors / Dance Minors *

This placement audition is part of a process to help students learn about our programs and the choices we offer in studying dance as a focus of the college experience. We want to learn about your abilities as a dancer in order to provide the best starting place within our program and to help guarantee your continuing success in dance. We encourage you to take this opportunity to discover the potential of your professional career beginning at USF.

  • This audition is designed for students who intend to major / minor in Dance at the University of South Florida. (Note: Students not choosing to major in dance who have an interest in an assessment of technique placement in order to take a specific course will be auditioned at the beginning of each semester. Currently enrolled students will receive placement recommendations from USF faculty based on individual progress in each course.)
  • Students will be required to audition in both Ballet and Modern Dance techniques in classes taught by USF Dance Faculty. A solo of 90 seconds or less is also required of all prospective dance majors. The solo may be student choreography or part of a work choreographed by someone else.

  • Students should be prepared with appropriate dancewear (tights / leotards) and footwear for both Ballet (ballet slippers) and Modern Dance (bare feet). In selective instances some students may be asked to participate in pointe work during a section of the ballet placement class. (Note: Pointe work is not required as part of the audition process.)

  • In order to assess both technical ability and learning styles, each 1-hour audition class will be structured as a condensed version of our typical majors level classes, which are scheduled for 1 hour and 50 minutes during the academic year. (All dance majors are required to take both Ballet and Modern Dance throughout their program of study at USF.)

  • USF dance technique classes are sequential over the academic year. Students who enter during the Spring Semester (January) will be recommended for placement according to the ongoing level of progress within the course.

  • Once the student has enrolled for courses, the faculty within the Dance Program has the opportunity to recommend a change in course level during the first week of classes in order to provide the student with the most appropriate level of entry into our technique curricula.

  • The faculty in the Dance Program place great value on each student’s individual potential in dance as well as in academic success. Please be reminded that acceptance to the Dance Program is contingent upon acceptance by the University of South Florida.
