This is the 3rd year of “A New Definition of Dance,” an initiative Dr Morris began in collaboration with Arts4All Florida (formerly VSA) in 2015.  The goal was to bring professional dancers with disabilities to USF and the surrounding community to perform, teach workshops, and engage in discussion about integrated/inclusive dance practices. Each year has brought a diverse and enriching experience to all involved.

This year, A New Definition of Dance will feature Luca “LazyLegz” Patuelli and his company, “ILL-Abilities” from Montreal, Canada. They are a company of breakdancers with varied cultural backgrounds.

ILL-Abilities, an international dance crew comprised of B-boys (break-dancers), have adapted and accepted their “differences” to become some of the best performers in the world, pursuing their passion: Dance!  Since Luca Patuelli’s 2016 tour in Florida with A New Definition of Dance, Arts4All Florida, the statewide arts and disability not for profit headquartered at the University of South Florida (USF), knew they hadn’t seen, learned or shared enough of what Mr. Patuelli had to convey to our society. Ill-Abilities’ mission is to redefine society’s view of disability, promote empowerment, and encourage limitless possibilities through motivational entertainment.

Through hard work and dedication, each member of the Ill-Abilities crew has become a world-renowned leader in their community for their skill and experience. Each dancer will share their journey getting to the top, not letting anything curb their positive attitudes or subdue their life’s motto: “No Excuses, No Limits”.

Luca along with five hip-hop and breakdancing crewmembers will converge on Florida in late October/early November 2018 for two weeks, providing workshops to students in schools and Department of Juvenile Justice programs, master classes for dance majors at universities, and open public performances in Tampa Bay, Jacksonville, and Miami.

Through a generous National Endowment for the Arts Challenge America Grant, Arts4All Florida will host a continuation of their collaborative work on A New Definition of Dance, statewide. This program highlights the accomplishments of internationally renowned dancers with disabilities and offers the opportunity for community outreach/opportunities that help breakdown negative stereotypes about people with disabilities.

The performance is Friday, Nov. 2nd at 7:30 pm in Theatre II.
