Appropriately enough, Doug Varone's choreography for Le Sacre du Printemps headlines the USF Spring Dance Concert. Stravinsky's iconoclastic pagan ritual composition triggered a riot at its 1913 Paris premiere performance, and while a violent upheaval in Theatre 1 is not expected, Varone's treatment of the Rite of Spring is brilliantly compelling. Members of Doug Varone and Dancers will be in residence at in late March, setting the piece on USF's student dancers. In addition, DanceUSF's John Parks will restage a sweltering Afro-Caribbean suite of jazz ballets: Come and Get the Beauty of it Hot by Talley Beatty. Featuring music by Natalie Cole, LaVern Baker, Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, and Charles Mingus, this staple of the Alvin Ailey troupe and many others is by turns exuberant, pensive, and spellbinding.
