David Frankel’s free adaptation of Molière’s The Doctor in Spite of Himself) transplants the 17th century antics of the original to a contemporary American never-never land where anything can happen-including the transformation of a simple fishing-camp owner into a miraculous physician capable of curing the sudden speechlessness of the rich Geronte’s beautiful daughter. Will the cure take hold? Will the Doctor take hold (of another man’s wife)? Will her husband take hold (of the Doctor’s neck)? Obstinate father bamboozled! Young love triumphant! Unending laughter!
